Crosscountry skiing trek with huskies and pulks
on the tracks of the past
During
this great trek we combine adventure, sport and culture. On the trails of
the past we are skiing through beautiful winter landscapes – snowy forests,
moraines, lakes, rivers and pristine forest of the Syöte national park. Our
route follows mostly prepared trails (scooter tracks) from the hiking center
Kylmäluoma (Kuusamo) to the national park Syöte. We stay over-night both in
traditional wilderness cabins and cosy log houses of the more modern times!
The best thing besides the beauty of nature: We don’t have to carry heavy
backpacks during this trekking week but have friendly huskies as helpers pulling
our luggage in pulks (luggage sledges) for us! We work as a team with those
amazing animals being attached with a rope to the pulk. A special kind of
winter adventure!

Programme
1st day:
Transfer from the airport
Kuusamo to the Hotel Herkko. Dinner, possibility to go to sauna, overnight.
2nd day:
We meet our guide after breakfast: Today we
train our skiing skills on the tracks around the hotel. In the morning still
without dogs and pulks – after lunch in the hotel we take as well our dogs
with us. In the evening information and preparation of the coming tour. Possibility
to go to sauna. Dinner and overnight in the hotel.
3nd
day: After a transfer
to our starting point Kylmäluoma we head out for our first stage towards the
wilderness cabin Harjajärvi. Lunch during the trek on a convenient spot. The
route is approx. 21 km and leads across frozen lakes, swamps and trough beautiful
wintry forests. All along a route prepared by snowmobiles (no official cross-countryskiing
track!) In old times the cabin Harjajärvi was the home for approx. 100 forestry-workers,
who lived under hard conditions doing logging. A part of the century about
which we like to tell much more in the hot sauna. Dinner. Overnight.
4th
day: This stage leads
along a wonderful lake, further through open hills to Susijärvi (wulflake)
where we will eat lunch. After this relaxing break we ski further to Ylimaa,
a cottage situated on the shore of a beautiful small lake close to the traditional
village of Taivalkoski. Possibility for sauna. Dinner overnight (Distance
approx. 20 km)
5th
day: After breakfast
we follow our route across beautiful hillsides with a great scenery – almost
all over driven trails. When we reach the small farming village Raappanan
we ski for a while on the frozen large rive Iijoki until we reach another
prepared trail which leads us to our cottage Ooka Stoppi. Possibility for
sauna. Dinner, overnight (Distance approx. 24 km)
6th
day: Along snowmobile
trails (which are all seldom used) we ski further to the Iso Syöte national
park. Depending on the condition of the group we ski even up to the top of
Pikku Syöte… with a marvellous scenery (distance about 18 - 20 km). Transfer
back to the hotel Herkko. Possibility for sauna and last dinner with the group
together…
7th
day:
After
breakfast transfer to the airport.
