Boreal Tours Ky – Barbara Willen
Being an enthusiastic adventure sportswoman I founded Boreal Tours Ky travel
agency in autumn 2003 and worked out a lot of interesting adventure, sports
and outdoor tours in northern Finland. Years of experience as a wilderness
guide and person responsible for marketing and product in tourism allow that
I organise all these tours from beginning to end. I also guide many of these
tours...
Being Swiss (resident of Finland between 1996 and 2008, of Sweden 2008 util now) I know very well what kind of tours central
European adventurer and nature enthusiasts are looking for. All Boreal programmes
are perfect combinations of these tour requests and the unlimited opportunities
of northern Finland. Boreal Tours is since spring 2006 as well PAN-certificated

I love the North and outdoor life. That is basically the reason why I have
been a lot travelling in Scandinavia since my childhood when still living
in Germany, studied polar ecology and finally moved to Finland in 2002.
During winter and spring, I guide several trips for Boreal Tours, starting
in January in Eastern Finland and continuing from March on with the trips
in Sweden. Most of the trips we do with assistance of huskies pulling pulks
with our luggage. That is not only comfortable since you have to carry nothing
else but your day bag - it is also a phantastic experience in itself working
as a team with those magnificent animals! Some times people ask me what I like
more: The deep Finnish forests or the rough Swedish mountains. Actually hard
to say since both kind of landscapes are totally different! You should join
us to both kind of trips ;o)
During the summer I guide only a few tours, for example the orchid safary
to Estonia. Otherwise I work in my other profession as a biologist doing environmental
surveys in Finland.

Actually, everything started with Jasper, a sledge dog I brought to my former
home in Swizerland from a trip in Alaska. I fell in love with those magnificent
animals and soon owned a whole pack of them, participated in sledge dog races,
worked for three seasons at Finn Jann's husky farm in Finland and guided a
few trips with my own dogs.
In 2008, me and my partner Edi finally decided to move to Finland, to Kuusamo.
I guide most of the trips of Boreal Tours along the Bear Trail in the Oulanka
nationalpark, not far from our new home. In winter my huskies accompany us
pulling sledges with equipment. Only in summer they are on holiday and we
have to carry our backpacks ourselves!
